Substance abuse in older adults is often underrecognized, yet it continues to grow as a concern in caregiving. This course helps caregivers understand how alcohol, prescription medications, and illicit substances can affect older adults in ways that differ from younger populations.


Learners will examine common risk factors, generational perspectives on substance use, and the physical, emotional, and social impact of addiction later in life. The training also explores stigma, stereotypes, and barriers to treatment, while highlighting the caregiver’s role in identifying warning signs and supporting appropriate care and intervention.
