What the HCA Certification Exam Covers
The HCA certification test has two parts, both administered in person at the same facility on the same day. Passing both components of the home care aide exam completes your examination requirements with the Washington State Department of Health and activates your HCA certification as a certified home care aide in Washington State.
Written Knowledge Test
The written portion of the Washington State HCA exam tests home care aide candidates on topics covered in their required HCA training. This component is sometimes referred to as the HCA assessment test or HCA final exam. Candidates who pass the written examination move directly to the skills component.
Skills Demonstration
The HCA skills test requires performing a set of hands-on caregiving tasks in front of an evaluator. Candidates demonstrate correct technique for tasks drawn from the Department of Health approved skills list, just like you practiced during your training. Performing each skill correctly and completely is required to pass. The Washington State HCA skills test is administered at the same facility as the written examination.
