Substance abuse among older adults is an often overlooked but growing concern. This course provides caregivers with an understanding of how alcohol, prescription medications, and illicit substances can affect older adults differently than younger populations. 


Learners will explore common risk factors, generational attitudes toward substance use, and the physical, emotional, and social consequences of addiction in later life. 


The course also addresses stigma, stereotypes, and barriers to treatment while emphasizing the caregiver’s role in recognizing warning signs and supporting appropriate intervention and care.


Learning Objectives:

  1. Define substance abuse and recognize common signs and symptoms in older adults.

  2. Identify ways substance abuse may present differently in older adults compared to younger populations.

  3. Describe how generational attitudes and life experiences influence views on substance use.

  4. Recognize stereotypes and stigma that may affect identification and treatment of substance abuse.

  5. Identify treatment options and supportive resources for individuals experiencing substance abuse.
