This course introduces caregivers to the fundamentals of nutrition and the important role food plays in maintaining health and well-being. Learners will explore healthy eating habits, USDA food guidelines, portion sizes, and the basic nutrients the body needs to function properly. The course also examines signs and symptoms of poor nutrition and how caregivers can encourage healthy food choices for clients.


In addition, learners will review strategies for supporting clients with meal preparation, special diets, and eating assistance. Emphasis is placed on promoting safety, dignity, and independence while helping clients meet their nutritional needs and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

  1. Explain the importance of good nutrition in maintaining health and well-being.

  2. Identify basic USDA food guidelines, serving sizes, and healthy food choices.

  3. Describe key nutrients and their role in the body.

  4. Recognize signs and symptoms of poor nutrition.

  6. Demonstrate safe and respectful techniques for assisting clients with eating and meal support.
