This course provides caregivers with the knowledge and skills required to safely perform nurse-delegated diabetes care tasks in Washington State.
Learners will build on core nurse delegation principles while focusing specifically on diabetes management, including blood glucose monitoring, insulin administration, and recognizing complications.
The course emphasizes the roles and responsibilities of the caregiver and delegating nurse, as well as the importance of following proper procedures and care plans.
Participants will gain an understanding of diabetes, how it affects the body, and how to support clients safely through delegated tasks. Emphasis is placed on identifying changes in condition, preventing complications, and responding appropriately to blood glucose fluctuations.
This course prepares caregivers to confidently perform diabetes-related delegated tasks while maintaining client safety and accountability.
Learning Objectives:
Identify key diabetes terms, symptoms, and types.
Recognize and respond to hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia.
Understand insulin basics, types, dosing, and storage.
Identify methods of insulin delivery and safe needle disposal.
Apply proper injection site selection and rotation.
Administer insulin safely using correct procedures.
Recognize factors affecting insulin absorption and overall safety.
Intended Audience: Long-term care workers (LTCW), home care aides (HCA), nursing assistants (NAR/NAC) (or anyone that will be getting one of these certifications before accepting delegated tasks)
