This course provides caregivers with the knowledge and skills required to safely perform nurse-delegated tasks in Washington State. Learners will explore the legal requirements of nurse delegation, the delegation process, and the roles and responsibilities of caregivers, registered nurses, and clients.
The course covers essential topics including medication administration, the Five Rights of Medication, communication and reporting expectations, and common delegated treatments performed in community and home care settings.
Participants will also gain an understanding of basic body systems, common health conditions, and how changes in a client’s condition can impact care and safety. Emphasis is placed on following proper procedures, recognizing complications, and knowing when to seek guidance from the delegating nurse.
This course prepares caregivers to confidently and competently accept delegated tasks while maintaining client safety and professional accountability.
Learning Objectives:
Explain nurse delegation laws, roles, and responsibilities.
Identify tasks that can and cannot be delegated.
Follow required communication and reporting procedures.
Understand major body systems and how they relate to delegated care.
Apply the Five Rights of Medication Administration.
Assist with and administer medications safely.
Recognize complications and report changes in condition to the RN.
Intended Audience:Long-term care workers (LTCW), home care aides (HCA), nursing assistants (NAR/NAC), or anyone that will be getting one of these certifications before accepting delegated tasks.

Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites to enroll in this course. However, to be delegated and use these certificates in practice, students must be able to perform the physical components of the skills evaluation and must hold an active Home Care Aide (HCA) or Nursing Assistant (NA-C or NA-R) credential. Only individuals with an HCA or NAC credential are eligible to receive nurse-delegated tasks.
